The Partit Nazzjonalista, through a statement signed by Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut, has called for special financial compensation to be awarded to Enemalta workers who have been directly involved in responding to the ongoing electricity crisis, while also renewing its call for automatic compensation for families and businesses affected by power cuts.
The Opposition expressed its appreciation to Enemalta employees who have been “working tirelessly in difficult conditions and under immense pressure” to restore electricity supplies across Malta and Gozo. It argued that these workers are not responsible for the planning failures and lack of investment that led to the current situation, but have instead been on the front line working long hours, often in extreme temperatures, to minimise the impact on residents and businesses.
The PN is proposing that all Enemalta workers involved in emergency operations during the crisis receive special financial compensation as recognition of their dedication, sacrifice and service. It said that while the Government had failed in its responsibility to plan and invest in the country’s infrastructure, it is the workers who are carrying the burden of the consequences.
The statement also stressed that responsibility for the electricity crisis remains with the Government and those who have managed the energy sector in recent years, adding that recognising workers’ efforts should not reduce the need for political accountability.
At the same time, the Opposition renewed its call for an automatic compensation mechanism for families and businesses affected by prolonged or repeated power cuts. It said compensation should cover losses including spoiled food, medicines and damaged appliances, and should be triggered automatically whenever established criteria are met, rather than being granted only on an “exceptional” basis.
The PN concluded by saying that, above all, people want a reliable electricity supply restored as quickly as possible so they can continue with their daily lives, particularly during the peak of summer.
