PN Says Malta Was Internationally Embarrassed After UEFA Match Power Cut

The Nationalist Party has criticised the Government over Malta’s ongoing electricity problems after a UEFA Conference League match at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali was temporarily suspended due to power cuts.

The PN said the interruption during the European fixture between Floriana FC and Kosovo’s FC Drita damaged Malta’s international reputation, arguing that the country’s infrastructure failures were exposed during a major sporting event.

According to the party, the match was halted after the Centenary Stadium experienced repeated disruptions to the electricity supply. The PN noted that the Malta Football Association (MFA) later issued a statement clarifying that there was no fault with the stadium’s floodlighting system, explaining that the issue originated from the national electricity supply, which was beyond the Association’s control.

The PN also argued that the Prime Minister’s recent apology does not address the underlying problem. The PN said families, businesses and the sporting community require long-term investment in Malta’s electricity distribution network rather than apologies, insisting that recurring summer power cuts should no longer become the norm.

The party added that while a generator enabled the UEFA Conference League qualifier to continue, many residents across Malta continue to cope with prolonged outages, generator noise or extreme heat without alternative power sources. It said these conditions are having a significant impact, particularly on vulnerable people.

The PN stated that “a modern country cannot continue relying on generators to keep basic services running”, adding that, as the Prime Minister himself had said, “the problem is not the people, but the Government leading them.”

The statement was signed by Graham Bencini, Shadow Minister for Sport.
