God Does Everything Possible to Give People Time to Repent – Archbishop

The Archbishop of Malta, has encouraged Christians to leave judgment in God’s hands, reflecting on the Gospel parable of the wheat and the weeds during Mass for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time at the Archbishop’s Palace Chapel in Mdina.

In his homily, the Archbishop explained that Jesus Himself interprets the parable, showing that throughout the world, “the children of the Kingdom” and those who choose evil will continue to live side by side until the final harvest. Rather than rushing to judge others, Archbishop Scicluna said believers should remember that good and evil can both be found within every human heart. “The Lord takes patience with us,” he said, reminding the faithful that if God judged immediately, “there would be no one left.”

Drawing from the Book of Wisdom, the Archbishop highlighted God’s mercy, quoting the passage that speaks of the Lord giving people “time to repent of their sins.” He stressed that God’s patience is an invitation to conversion, and that no one can truly know another person’s final destiny because that remains God’s mystery alone.

Archbishop Scicluna also reflected on the parables of the mustard seed and the yeast, describing them as lessons in the Gospel’s humble way of working. Even the smallest acts of faith and goodness can grow into something great when entrusted to God. He concluded by praying for Malta’s catechists through the intercession of St George Preca, asking the Lord to continue nurturing the seed He has planted in their hearts.
