Prime Minister Robert Abela has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting young people leaving residential care, describing aftercare services as an important step in helping them build independent lives.

During a visit to The Manor in Sliema, a residence that provides aftercare support for young people and adults transitioning from residential care, Dr Abela met with professionals working closely with residents and discussed the services available to prepare them for independent living.

The Prime Minister said the Government will continue to support young people during key moments in their lives. He explained that the aftercare programme is intended for those who turn 18 and leave adolescent residential institutions, ensuring they receive assistance as they move towards adulthood.

Through the programme, participants are guaranteed access to education and training, immediate accommodation and financial support. Dr Abela said this assistance can make a tangible difference for individuals who have experienced difficult and traumatic circumstances, while also helping them pursue education, employment and long-term stability.

Representatives from Fondazzjoni Sebħ highlighted the importance of continued support for young people who often lack a strong family support network. They explained that The Manor, formerly known as Dar Fatima, provides a home-like environment where residents can live more independently while continuing to receive professional social support.

The Government also noted that it has an agreement with Fondazzjoni Sebħ to continue operating the residence. This year, it is investing €28.4 million in public social agreements with voluntary organisations providing social services, an increase of almost €3 million compared to the previous year.
