Canada is estimated to have recorded around 17,700 Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) deaths during 2025, according to calculations published by Alex Schadenberg of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.
The estimate is based partly on official provincial figures. Schadenberg said Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Nova Scotia reported a combined 10,196 assisted deaths in 2025, compared with 9,501 in 2024 — an increase of 7.3%.
“These provinces represent about 67.7% of Canada’s population,” Schadenberg wrote. Based on the available figures, he estimated approximately 17,700 MAiD deaths nationwide, representing around 5.6% of all deaths in Canada.
Health Canada has not yet published complete official figures for 2025. Previous national data showed thousands of MAiD deaths annually, with assisted dying accounting for around 5% of deaths.
Schadenberg has also estimated that Canada surpassed 100,000 reported euthanasia deaths in 2026 when more recent estimated figures are included. MAiD was legalised in Canada in 2016.
Canada is also scheduled to expand MAiD eligibility for cases involving mental illness as the sole underlying condition in 2027.
