Malta’s Public Works Department is participating in an international project aimed at tackling coastal erosion and identifying sustainable ways to protect beaches and coastal areas.

The Sandland project focuses on the growing loss of beaches and coastline caused by natural processes including waves, storms, rain, wind and rising sea levels.

Public Works Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said the project supports ongoing efforts to strengthen the resilience of Malta’s coastline and address challenges linked to climate change.

“The Public Works Department is contributing directly to this project through technical expertise and operational support,” the minister said, adding that work is focused on developing more effective monitoring and coastal intervention methods.

Sandland is exploring an innovative nature-based approach known as “beach nourishment”. The project will identify underwater sand deposits and assess whether the material can safely be used to replenish beaches in a controlled and environmentally responsible manner.

Officials explained that traditional structures such as breakwaters have sometimes provided only temporary solutions and, in certain cases, disrupted the natural movement of sand.

The project brings together universities and public authorities from Malta and Sicily.
