Nationalist MP John Baptist Camilleri has criticised the handling of works at Fajtata in San Tumas, Marsaskala, claiming public funds were spent on privately owned land and calling for the entire area to be recovered for public use.
According to Camilleri, Infrastructure Malta knew the land was privately owned but still proceeded with embellishment works. He claimed the owner allowed the works to be completed before raising the matter, with the site later becoming a paid parking area.
“This is a clear case where public money was spent badly,” Camilleri said. He argued that while improving the area was positive, “the land should have been expropriated beforehand.”
Camilleri also raised concerns about another section of the same land, where a souvenir shop application had previously been refused. He referred to recent works involving a wall and the placement of stone, claiming part of the coastal land could be closed off.
“That land is ODZ, part of the shoreline and of ecological importance,” he said.
The MP appealed to the responsible minister and Infrastructure Malta to resolve the situation quickly, insisting: “The government has only one road — recover all this land and keep it public.”
