Dr Miriam Sciberras, CEO of Life Network Foundation, has reacted to the Prudente judgment, highlighting strong comments made by the Court about the influence of pro-choice voices surrounding the case.
The judgment states that Prudente, through her own research and after speaking to “pro-choice doctors, ergo in favour of abortion,” had become convinced she would die of septicaemia unless the pregnancy was terminated.
The Court said that, through Google and information she was receiving, “this poor mother was subjected to fear and strong emotional pressure that either the baby inside her would be removed or she would die.”
The judgment then states: “The Court has no hesitation whatsoever in saying that this woman ended up being used by people, so-called pro-choice, who, without taking into account her emotions and those of the father, pushed forward the more extreme legal change desired by them — in English, she played ball to their beliefs.”
Sciberras said the Prudente case had fuelled a lengthy abortion debate in Malta.
“Thanks to everyone who was part of the coalition in favour of life. Our fight for the protection of every life continues,” she said.
