Former MP Marlene Farrugia has issued a strongly worded appeal ahead of the election, explaining why she no longer supports the Labour Party and urging voters to back opposition and third-party candidates.
In a social media post, Farrugia recalled that she had voted Labour because she wanted “stability, economic growth and prosperity.” She said she had hoped a Labour government would deliver “respect, health, justice, identity, accountability and meritocracy in our islands” while improving the quality of life of Maltese families.
Farrugia wrote that she believed Labour represented stability and a better future for the country. However, she said her confidence gradually faded. “From the same stable government, however, I experienced abusive relationships,” she wrote. “I forgave. I excused. I kept forgiving and accepting until the end.”
She argued that her outlook changed when she concluded that economic stability alone was not enough. “Stability means nothing if the quality of life is destroyed,” she said, adding that she had witnessed “instability in health, education, the environment, total disrespect for collective memory and squandering of public funds, assets, spaces with total disregard for accountability, rule of law, meritocracy , social justice and basic human decency. Impunity reigns for the select few. While the general public carries the burden of all government abuse and failure, the same select few feast on their pickings.”
Reflecting on her political journey, Farrugia stated that once she found the courage to reassess her views, she realised that those she had trusted “were taking me for granted and mocking me while promising me the moon and stars.”
The former MP ended her message with a clear electoral endorsement, writing: “This time: ADPD, Momentum, PN.” She also warned that “fear of the day after the election should not lead us towards further destruction, injustice, betrayal and abuse of our trust.”
