Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced a series of proposals aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and increasing physical activity across Malta. Speaking during a discussion in Santa Venera, he stated that the Labour Party will present “the first electoral manifesto in Malta to be fully costed measure by measure,” while also referring to the introduction of a Wellbeing Index to measure quality of life.

Among the key measures is the introduction of BMI screening in schools. This initiative aims to identify children at risk of obesity early, with referrals to dietitians and tailored programmes focusing on nutrition and physical activity. Dr Abela explained that this system will provide early intervention and targeted support.

Financial support will also increase, with tax refunds for extracurricular activities rising from €300 to €400 annually and extended to more sports, artistic and cultural activities, including obstacle course racing (OCR). Additionally, elite athletes in the private sector will benefit from 10 days of government-paid sports leave when representing Malta internationally.

Dr Abela also outlined plans to strengthen mental health services through a new facility at Mater Dei Hospital and expanded community care. He said these measures aim to ensure economic growth continues to improve people’s wellbeing.
