Reports Reveal Dangerous Access to Illegal Abortion Pills

Reports have emerged regarding an alleged initiative involving the placement of padlocks across Malta and Gozo containing abortion pills. According to findings reported by Newsbook Malta, around 15 padlocks were installed, offering access to medication intended to terminate pregnancy, raising legal and ethical concerns.

A test carried out with a pregnant woman reportedly showed how easily access could be obtained. After sending an email, she “received a survey” and later participated in a Zoom call where she stated she did not wish to continue the pregnancy. She explained that minimal verification was required, noting that a simple “no” to whether she was over nine weeks pregnant was accepted without evidence, despite her being eight months pregnant.

Within approximately ten minutes, she received instructions, including a code to open one of the padlocks. The pills reportedly included Mifepristone and Misoprostol, with guidance on usage and warnings of side effects such as “heavy bleeding, pain, fever, and nausea.”

Under Maltese law, abortion remains illegal. As outlined in Article 241 of the Criminal Code, individuals involved in causing an abortion may face imprisonment. Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela reiterated that “abortion is a criminal act.”
