Storm Harry is set to hit Sicily stronger than Malta, with weather conditions expected to worsen significantly in the coming hours.
Regional President Renato Schifani described the measures as “necessary to minimise damage and disruption.” Several mayors across the provinces of Ragusa, Siracusa, Catania and Messina ordered the closure of schools for 48 hours, while universities in Palermo, Catania and Messina suspended activities. Residents were urged to limit non-essential travel.
Forecasts indicate wind gusts exceeding “100 kilometres per hour” and storm surges with waves reaching up to six metres. In Lipari, schools and coastal roads were closed, while fast maritime connections to the Aeolian Islands were suspended.
Hospitals in Sicily advised the public to “come only for emergencies.”
