The Armed Forces of Malta have signed a new contract to procure an additional helicopter, strengthening the Force’s operational capabilities across several critical areas. The agreement was signed with Leonardo Helicopters and will result in the delivery of another AW139 helicopter, increasing the current fleet from three to four aircraft.

According to the Armed Forces of Malta, this acquisition forms part of the ongoing standardisation of the helicopter fleet operated by the AFM’s Air Wing. The AW139 helicopters are described as playing “a vital role in border control, surveillance, maritime law enforcement, and search and rescue operations,” making them a core asset in national security and safety efforts.
The addition of a fourth helicopter is expected to allow the Air Wing to better sustain these diverse responsibilities while maintaining “the continuous operational momentum required to ensure security and safety in the Central Mediterranean.” The AFM highlighted that increased fleet capacity supports long-term operational readiness and resilience.
Leonardo Helicopters, which has supported the Armed Forces of Malta for over a decade, reaffirmed its full commitment to assisting the continued standardisation and development of the Force, building on an established partnership between the two entities.
