Government Funds Boost Local Council Maintenance of Major Projects

Several Local Councils are set to receive additional funding through the Local Government Division to support the maintenance and upkeep of major infrastructural projects previously carried out by the Central Government in their localities. This was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli together with Director General of the Local Government Division, Emile Vassallo. It was explained that this scheme forms part of a set of initiatives “that offer additional funds to the Councils” so they can carry out necessary maintenance for the benefit of their communities.

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli stated that the scheme was introduced after several projects completed over the years “were being abandoned, because the Councils did not have the necessary funds to carry out regular maintenance.” She added that, through this initiative, the Government is ensuring that past investment is preserved: “No one wants the value of investment made in these projects to go to waste.” She noted this approach also aligns with the Local Councils’ path towards Malta Vision 2050.

She emphasised that maintenance of public spaces—such as gardens, recreational centres and playgrounds—is essential not only for improving these areas but also “for the safety of residents.”

Director General Vassallo explained that the scheme, now in its seventh year, will once again allow numerous Local Councils to benefit. He described it as “an important step… so that the development of open spaces in localities can continue to be enjoyed for many years.” He added that around a quarter of a million euro will be allocated for maintenance works.

Among the selected projects are culvert maintenance, new tree planting, installation of benches, open-air fitness zones, children’s play equipment and street lighting. The localities benefiting are: Mosta, Birkirkara, Ħal Għargħur, Ħal Lija, Gudja, Marsaxlokk, Paola, Mqabba, Nadur, Xagħra and Żebbuġ (Gozo).
