The Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Ministers Clifton Grima and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, has inaugurated the new Information and Communication Technology Institute (IICT) at the MCAST main campus in Kordin. The building, part of MCAST’s ‘Masterplan 2’, began being used by students in 2024 and is now officially opened following a €14.5 million investment co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Spread across 11,900 square metres, the institute includes “58 new learning spaces, including 30 computer laboratories, 16 classrooms, 5 hardware labs, two network labs, game development labs, and research spaces including in artificial intelligence.” Students will also have access to green-screen facilities, a robotics lab, and modern equipment designed to strengthen hands-on training in this fast-growing sector.

During his visit, the Prime Minister met students working in gaming, networking, robotics, and Raspberry Pi labs. He stated that “when we invest in education, we are investing not only in buildings but in the ambition and future of our students,” describing the institute as part of a digital future being built by tomorrow’s leaders. He linked this investment to the wider Malta 2050 Vision and highlighted measures such as increased stipends and parental grants.

This project forms part of a €32.9 million investment in three new MCAST buildings. Minister Grima said the initiative strengthens a modern education system aligned with the digital economy, while Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi added that the institute is “a promise that Malta will continue building on the potential of its people.”
