Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg held a series of high-level meetings in Doha as part of efforts to deepen Malta’s relations with Qatar. According to the statement, Dr Borg met with the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, where discussions centred on “enhancing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the areas of economic collaboration and tourism.”

The press release noted that both sides “reaffirmed their commitment to expanding people-to-people exchanges and creating new opportunities that support mutual growth.” The Deputy Prime Minister also held a separate meeting with the Minister of Energy Affairs of Qatar, Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, during which they discussed strengthening energy cooperation, sustainability, and long-term energy security.

During the visit, Dr Borg also participated in the 2025 Doha Forum as a panel speaker on migration. In his intervention, he “underscored the importance of humane, sustainable and collaborative approaches to migration management” and referred to developments in the Middle East that continue to influence global mobility.
The statement concluded that the visit “marked another important step in strengthening Malta’s strategic partnerships and advancing shared objectives for stability and progress.”
