“Respect Collective Memory”: Farrugia on Żabbar Development

As concerns intensify over the approved five-storey development close to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces, Marlene Farrugia delivered a message that reflects the same sentiments raised during the today’s protest in Misraħ Madonna Medjatriċi. Residents and the Local Council have argued that the project threatens Żabbar’s historic identity and the character of its central square.

In a statment, Farrugia stressed the need to honour cultural memory and heritage, stating: “No one is telling you to do nothing. We are telling you to show respect for the collective memory and the Maltese heritage, but above all, show respect to your children.”

Referring to remarks by President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, she highlighted the importance of heritage for younger generations, adding: “They want to know who they are by belonging to a community that can pass on its patrimony whole, strong, and visible.”

Her message aligns with community concerns that the proposed height and scale risk overshadowing the sanctuary, disrupting the area’s visual harmony, and weakening Żabbar’s cultural fabric. It reinforces public calls for development that respects historical continuity and safeguards Malta’s shared patrimony.
