Esplora marked the start of its Christmas and New Year celebrations on 5 December with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Esplora Interactive Science Centre. During the event, guests were given an exclusive first look at this year’s special programme, Santa’s STEAM Factory, which will be open from 21 December to 6 January.
The ceremony also featured the launch of Esplora’s official Christmas production—a hybrid video blending animation with real-world footage created in collaboration with local artists. The result is a story that “blends creativity with innovation,” reflecting Esplora’s multidisciplinary approach to science, technology and the arts.

Attending the event were Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti; Kalkara Mayor Wayne Aquilina; and Esplora Senior Director Mary Ann Cauchi, together with employees from Esplora and Xjenza Malta.
This year, Esplora will transform into Santa’s STEAM Factory, an immersive experience highlighting the imagination and curiosity behind Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The programme includes workshops, science shows and Planetarium films designed to “inspire people of all ages.”
Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti said, “Esplora continues to play a crucial role in nurturing a love for science among young people.” Mayor Aquilina praised Esplora’s innovations, while Mary Ann Cauchi said Christmas offers “a unique opportunity to inspire curiosity and learning.”
The ceremony concluded with a vibrant lighting display marking the official start of Christmas and New Year at Malta’s Interactive Science Centre.
