A government press statement announced that the Marsa horse-racing track is set to reopen in the coming days following extensive regeneration works. Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, visited the site “ahead of the reopening of the horse-racing track for the championship season.” The project, the government said, forms part of its commitment to “continue strengthening Malta’s sports infrastructure.”

Prime Minister Abela noted that horse racing remains an important sporting discipline in Malta and said the government had delivered on its pledge for the “regeneration of the Marsa horse-racing track.” He highlighted that new “international-level facilities” have been created for racing and training.

During the visit, officials explained that the horse-racing community had long wanted a modern, high-quality track offering more events, professionalism and safety. The new track, designed by architect Edwin Mintoff with guidance from Swedish architect Lars Sandstrom, now sits “on a single level,” allowing higher speeds and greater spectacle.

Upgrades include new lighting for evening training, a new safety railing, layered stone and sand surfacing, and tree planting around the track. The Prime Minister thanked all those involved and wished athletes a successful season.
