PN Says Next Generation Will “Pay the Price” for Climate Failures

The Nationalist Party has warned that “Labour’s lack of ambition pushes Malta to the bottom of EU climate rankings,” citing new projections issued by the European Commission. The party noted that Malta is expected to be the only EU Member State which “by 2030 will be emitting more pollution than in 2005,” according to the latest Climate Action Progress Report.

The report forecasts that by 2030, Malta’s greenhouse gas emissions will be “30% higher than 2005 levels,” and could rise to 40% if no new measures are introduced. This stands in sharp contrast with Malta’s target to reduce emissions by 19%.

The PN said that for years the country has witnessed “finger-pointing, excuses, and blame,” arguing that the Labour Government has shown “a serious lack of ambition,” investing more in PR than in regeneration, mitigation, and long-term planning. It added that this lack of ambition will leave “the next generation to pay the price.”

The statement stressed that while the PN has consistently supported fair and realistic EU climate negotiations for Malta, “fair treatment cannot be used as an excuse for failure.” Shadow Minister Eve Borg Bonello said climate policy must drive green energy, sustainable infrastructure, and innovative climate-tech solutions.
