Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that upcoming decisions in the months ahead will depend on “who has the competence and experience to manage the country’s economy and finances,” particularly to ensure that energy subsidies remain sustainable for families and businesses. Speaking during an interview on ONE, he referred to discussions held at a recent European leaders’ summit, where concern was expressed about geopolitical challenges affecting other countries.
Dr Abela noted that Malta has managed to keep energy prices stable, a situation he said is not being replicated elsewhere. He emphasised that while government finances currently allow subsidies to continue, their long-term sustainability depends on effective financial management. He also cited projections by the IMF indicating that Malta’s economy is expected to remain among the strongest until 2030, provided leadership remains competent across sectors such as energy, security, and governance.
The Prime Minister outlined several ongoing and planned projects, including an intermediate care hospital, a new mental health facility, and expanded emergency services. He also highlighted the “Malta in Motion” transport initiative, which aims to integrate rail, sea, and road transport over a 15-year period.
Marking Labour Day, Dr Abela said that around 140 collective agreements in recent years have resulted in €2 billion in wage increases. He added that the 1st of May will celebrate achievements in employment, improved conditions, and continued support for workers.
