Italy’s justice referendum has resulted in a majority rejecting the proposed reforms, with projections indicating 53.9% voting “No” and 46.1% voting “Yes.” The outcome marks a significant moment in the country’s political landscape, reflecting a divided electorate on institutional change and the future direction of governance.

At the centre of the response was Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who delivered a measured and prominent reaction following the result. She stated, “We respect the decision of the citizens. There remains regret for a missed opportunity to modernise Italy,” while emphasising that the government will “move forward with responsibility, determination and respect for Italy.”

Meloni’s message focused on continuity and stability, highlighting her commitment to governance despite the setback. Her remarks underline an acceptance of the democratic outcome while reaffirming her long-standing position that reform was intended to improve efficiency and modernise the country’s systems.

Reactions from opposition figures contrasted sharply. Elly Schlein said, “We have won… a clear message to Giorgia Meloni,” while Giuseppe Conte described the vote as “a very strong political signal.”
