Reacting to a Times of Malta article titled “Robert Abela dodges questions on whether government argued fraud in arbitration,” former Member of Parliament Marlene Farrugia accused the government of betraying the public’s trust and defending those responsible for wrongdoing.
In a strongly worded comment, Farrugia described the Vitals affair as “an obscenity.” She wrote: “Imagine someone rapes your mother. You entrust a close friend to seek justice for her. Instead, he befriends the criminal who violated your most beloved.” Farrugia continued: “That is what our Labour Government did — it sided with those who committed the greatest cruelty, instead of defending the people.”
She added that the hospitals deal represented “the greatest betrayal of public trust,” concluding her message with the words: “A people betrayed. Mafia — We are not the Ġaħan you call us.” Her comments came amid growing public pressure for the government to publish the full arbitration ruling on the controversial hospitals concession.
