Malta’s Legal Aid Agency has signed its first-ever collective agreement, marking a key step toward greater dignity and recognition for public sector workers in the justice system. The signing ceremony was presided over by Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform Jonathan Attard, who described it as “a clear confirmation of the Government’s vision for a fairer, more modern and competitive Malta, where workers remain central to improving their conditions.”

Minister Attard highlighted that the agreement follows record funding allocated to the justice sector in the 2026 Budget. Over recent years, the Legal Aid Agency has grown significantly and now manages a service provided by more than 50 specialised lawyers across civil, criminal, and victim support cases.

He noted reforms such as the Legal Aid Management System, a new information website, community education campaigns, and closer collaboration with schools and social workers. Attard also announced that the Office of the Children’s Advocate will soon be transferred under the Agency’s mandate to expand services for child protection.

Agency CEO Bruno Zahra praised the progress achieved through a motivated team, while GWU Secretary General Josef Bugeja described the discussions as “cordial and constructive,” ensuring fair conditions for all.
