MP Carmelo Abela, Head of the Maltese Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA), represented Malta at a joint meeting of the Assembly’s Political Committee, Committee on Democracy and Security, and the Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group, held on 27 October 2025 in Palermo, Sicily. The seminar focused on the theme “Security in the Mediterranean Basin.”
Chaired by the Italian delegation to the NATO PA, the event gathered parliamentarians and experts to discuss shared security challenges in the Euro-Mediterranean region, including climate change, migration, organised crime, and terrorism. Speakers included Renato Schifani, President of the Region of Sicily, and video messages were delivered by Dubravka Šuica, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, and Sebastiano Musumeci, Italian Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies.
In his intervention, MP Abela underlined the Mediterranean’s strategic importance for European and regional security, stressing the vulnerability of islands like Malta to rising sea levels. He also drew attention to how developments in the Arctic region could have long-term commercial and environmental effects on the Mediterranean.
“We must act on what science is telling us,” Abela said. “Beyond making pledges, we must honour them—for the sake of our planet and our shared Mediterranean region.”
