The European Commission has approved more than €103 million in financial assistance from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) to help Malta, Portugal and Spain recover from the devastating impact of recent storms. Of this total, Malta will receive an advance payment of €931,014 to support its recovery efforts.

Malta was struck by Storm Harry between 19 and 21 January 2026, with severe weather causing flooding, coastal damage and disruption to transport services. According to the information released, the storm also had significant consequences for public infrastructure, ports, the fishing and aquaculture sectors, agricultural assets and local communities across the country.

The advance payment of €931,014 forms part of the wider EU solidarity package and is intended to assist Malta in addressing the immediate aftermath of the storm and supporting recovery works in affected areas.

The European Commission also highlighted the long-standing role of the EU Solidarity Fund, noting that since its creation in 2002, it has provided more than €11 billion in assistance for 148 disaster events, including 128 natural disasters and 20 public health emergencies, supporting 25 EU Member States and six accession countries.
