The Labour Party has accused the Nationalist Party of objecting to people being informed about the work carried out by a democratically elected government, following criticism concerning news reporting by the national broadcaster.
In a statement, the PL argued that, like any public broadcasting service, PBS has a duty to report on the Government’s executive functions, including policy launches, project inaugurations and daily ministerial responsibilities.
The party said such reporting is distinct from political party activity and claimed it is presented through “factual, and not partisan, comments” in news bulletins.
Referring to parliamentary information from 2012, the PL said that during an eight-month period there were 121 comments from the Prime Minister and government ministers, compared with 28 Labour Party comments. It also cited another period in which 96 of 106 PBS news comments involved the Prime Minister and ministers under a Nationalist administration.
The Labour Party claimed the PN’s “only problem” is that people are informed about measures implemented by the country’s administration.
The PL also questioned the “new style of politics” promised by PN leader Alex Borg, saying it is “falling apart piece by piece”.
