Malta recorded the lowest share of tourist nights during the two busiest months of 2025 among all European Union member states, according to Eurostat data published on 7 July 2026.

Just 21.9% of Malta’s annual tourist accommodation nights were recorded in July and August, significantly below the EU average of 31.1%. Malta ranked ahead of Germany, at 24%, and Finland, at 24.1%.

The figures also show Malta exceeded the EU average share of annual tourist nights during eight months: January to May and October to December. According to the Malta Tourism Authority, this reflects the country’s development beyond the traditional summer “sun and sea” tourism model.

Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said investment had helped Malta become “a unique destination, with strong infrastructure and a service base capable of welcoming visitors throughout the twelve months of the year”.

MTA CEO Carlo Micallef described the figures as “a remarkable achievement for Malta and Gozo”, highlighting investment in cultural tourism, heritage, gastronomy, sports, diving, MICE and international events.

By comparison, 54.5% of Croatia’s annual tourist nights occurred in July and August, followed by Bulgaria at 43.4% and Greece at 41.6%.
