Malta’s Cleaning and Maintenance Department is stepping up its operations across Malta and Gozo during the summer weeks, particularly in areas experiencing increased activity from residents and tourists.
While cleaning and maintenance work continues throughout the year, operations are intensified during summer as more people visit squares, promenades, coastal areas and tourist centres. The department increases both the frequency and intensity of its work to keep these locations in good condition.

Local Government and Public Works Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli highlighted the importance of this work, saying it is “essential so that Maltese and Gozitan localities remain clean, safe and attractive for everyone.”
Permanent Secretary Emil Vassallo explained that operations are carefully planned according to each locality’s needs, with additional resources directed towards busier areas.

Daily interventions include washing roads and pavements using specialised vehicles, sweeping streets and squares, cleaning and sanitising waste containers, and maintaining monuments and public spaces.
Special attention is also given to coastal areas, beaches and mass events. Cleaning often takes place at night or early in the morning to reduce disruption. Following feasts and festivals, workers begin cleaning immediately to return public areas to normal as quickly as possible.
