Speaker of the House of Representatives Carmelo Abela received Cyprus High Commissioner to Malta Yiorgos Christofides at Parliament for a farewell courtesy call.
During the meeting, Abela reaffirmed what was described as the “excellent and longstanding friendship” between Malta and Cyprus, built on shared Mediterranean values, historical experiences and cooperation within the European Union, the Commonwealth and international fora.
Discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in education, research and innovation, culture, tourism, trade and investment. The Speaker also welcomed growing scientific collaboration and referred to opportunities linked to a recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding.
Economic relations were also discussed, with Abela noting increased engagement between Maltese and Cypriot business communities. Digital innovation, financial services, life sciences, maritime industries and advanced manufacturing were highlighted as areas with further potential.
Both sides also discussed stronger air and maritime connectivity, recognising its importance for tourism, trade and people-to-people contacts.
Abela thanked Christofides for his contribution to strengthening relations during his tenure and wished him well in his future endeavours.
