A rescue operation was launched in Comino on Saturday evening after the Rescue Coordination Centre received reports of a rockfall, with initial information indicating that several people required urgent assistance.
According to an official statement issued by the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), “the Rescue Coordination Centre received a report of a rockfall in Comino, with first reports indicating that persons required immediate assistance.” An AFM rescue vessel was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, rescue personnel evacuated one female casualty who required medical attention. She was transported to Mġarr Harbour, where she was handed over to medical personnel from Gozo General Hospital. A second individual, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to Mġarr Harbour by a private vessel for further treatment.
The operation also involved a rescue vessel from the Civil Protection Department carrying specialist rescue personnel to assist with the emergency response.
Meanwhile, a search operation was launched to locate a third person. Divers from Gozo Command and the AFM’s 3rd Regiment joined the search. The AFM stated that divers “confirmed that a person was found trapped underwater and showed no signs of life.”
The Armed Forces of Malta confirmed that the rescue operation remains ongoing, while a magisterial inquiry has been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
