Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg sid that European Central Bank statistics show Government borrowing had reached around €12 billion by April 2026, shortly before Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the general election.
Speaking during a Nifs Ġdid event in Naxxar with PN candidates from the 10th district, Borg said this meant Government borrowing had increased by €1 billion in one month. He also accused the Government and the Finance Minister of directing the National Statistics Office not to publish the usual monthly debt figures before the election.
Borg said the NSO had published similar statistics before the previous election, while the European Central Bank had now shown that Government borrowing reached “12 billion euro” by the end of April.
During the same event, Borg also spoke about the environment, saying the PN opposed placing an incinerator near Naxxar residents. He said a Nationalist Government would promote a “Waste-to-Product” approach, create a park in every locality, and introduce an Aesthetics Malta programme.
On planning, Borg said appeals against developments should stop works until decided, with appeals concluded within six months. He also pledged action on sport, including a car racing track and a 5% tax rate for professional athletes.
