New specialised training programmes are being delivered to elected members and employees of Local Councils, aimed at strengthening their day-to-day work and improving services within communities. The initiative forms part of the National Training Strategy for the Local Government sector, launched last year, with the first certificates awarded on Wednesday morning to participants who successfully completed their courses.

The training is co-financed through European Social Funds and is being coordinated by the National Training Council for Local Government, which brings together the Institute for Public Services, the Local Government Directorate, the Association for Local Councils, and the Association of Executive Secretaries. Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi described the initiative as “a direct investment in our communities,” noting that the project is valued at around €600,000, with approximately €530,000 funded by the European Union.

He added that the programme includes training sessions, study visits, and practical experiences both locally and abroad, aimed at strengthening the skills of council members and staff. Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli emphasised that investing in human resources ensures “a stronger, more professional and efficient service for citizens.”

The initiative also aligns with Malta’s long-term Vision 2050 strategy.
