A statement issued by the Maltese Augustinian Friars during the Ordinary Provincial Chapter 2026 has expressed “full solidarity” with Pope Leo XIV, while strongly supporting his message of peace. The friars also raised concern over “recent attacks directed toward himself and his ministry,” while condemning “all forms of war, violence, and any threats to the freedom and dignity of the human person.”
Pope Leo XIV is himself an Augustinian, sharing the same religious tradition as the Maltese friars and has a close connection with Malta, having visited the country several times in the past.
The Prior Provincial Fr Leslie Gatt OSA and the Chapter Assembly affirmed support for his mission “to proclaim the Gospel while promoting justice and peace without compromise,” calling for courage and perseverance. Quoting Saint Augustine of Hippo, they stated that “those who love peace and desire to possess it” must “do their utmost to multiply those who possess it.”
The friars reiterated their appeal for global peace, highlighting concern for the Middle East and condemning “every form of abuse of power.” They urged leaders to return to dialogue and reconciliation.
The statement coincides with the Pope’s visit to Annaba, Algeria.
