New Life for Traditional Sport as Kirkop Boċċi Club Restored
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The boċċi club in Ħal Kirkop has officially been restored and returned to the community after nearly two decades of abandonment, following extensive regeneration works by the Public Works Department. The project transformed “a site that had been in a state of abandonment for nearly 20 years into a fully operational community facility.”

Initial works focused on a thorough clean-up, including the removal of construction waste and overgrown vegetation. The playing surface, spanning 200 square metres, was upgraded with a 25mm layer of fine sand to meet required standards. Structural improvements included excavation, a new concrete base, rebuilding of a stone wall, and installation of tiles, drainage systems, and accessibility adjustments.

Further enhancements included electrical upgrades, new lighting, plastering, painting, and the installation of 64 sports seats. Additional works involved aluminium doors, double-glazed windows, steel gates, and roof waterproofing to ensure long-term durability and safety.

Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia stated the transformation created “a community space where the game of boċċi… can be enjoyed,” reaffirming a commitment to community investment. The Mayor and federation representatives also welcomed the project, highlighting its importance in preserving a traditional Maltese sport.
