Opposition Leader Alex Borg called for “concrete and immediate action” by the European Union in response to growing threats affecting the Mediterranean during the European People’s Party Summit in Brussels. He stressed that Malta “cannot afford to remain passive” in the face of risks such as those posed by the Russian tanker Arctic Metagaz, highlighting environmental and security concerns.
Borg underlined the need for “more effective European coordination” to safeguard the seas, energy supply, and regional stability. He noted that the Mediterranean “lies at the heart of Malta’s and Europe’s strategic interests,” urging that emerging risks be addressed “with seriousness and joint action.”
During discussions, European leaders also emphasised strengthening solidarity in defence, while respecting “the principle of military neutrality of certain Member States.” Borg concluded that Malta can serve as “a credible voice at European level” by balancing collective security with its core principles.
The Summit also addressed developments in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Iran, alongside issues such as migration, competitiveness, and the EU budget. Borg held meetings with key European figures and attended the EPP’s 50th anniversary celebrations, marking continued international political cooperation.
