The Labour Party has issued a strongly worded statement criticising the Nationalist Party following remarks made by PN Leader Alex Borg regarding the party’s internal finances. The statement, released on Sunday by the Labour Party’s Communications Office, refers to Borg’s confirmation that the PN retained funds which “should have been paid towards tax and social security contributions of its employees.”
Describing the situation as “extremely serious,” the Labour Party stressed that “the law is clear that the misappropriation of funds constitutes a very serious criminal offence.” It argued that such actions raise serious questions about the PN’s credibility, stating that this admission shows “that the Nationalist Party cannot be trusted with the governance of the country.”
The statement further claims that, after “five years of breaching the law on party financing,” it is now emerging that the PN “went so far as to steal the contributions of their own workers” in order to offset what it described as “poor financial decisions” made over several years.
According to the Labour Party, it is also “evident that the Nationalist Party Leader is now effectively accepting that it will ultimately be the public who will be paying for his shortcomings and those of the leaders before him.”
Concluding, the statement asserts: “It uses and discards its own workers, let alone what it would do to the people if it were ever entrusted with running the country.”
