Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has shared a personal reflection on the meaning of Christmas, announcing that “this year I’m changing everything.” She explained that although she has always considered herself “a black belt in Christmas trees,” she has decided to focus on creating a nativity scene instead.
Meloni said she chose to do this “when nobody does anymore” and at a time “when schools say we can’t because it might offend other cultures.” She questioned this reasoning, asking, “How can a baby born in a manger offend you?” and “How can a family fleeing to protect that child offend you?”
She emphasised the cultural and civilizational values she associates with the nativity, stating that “whether you believe in God or not, this symbol contains the values that founded my civilization.” Meloni added, “I believe in respect because this symbol taught me that… I believe in the sanctity of life because this newborn child taught me that.”
The Prime Minister said she wants her daughter Ginevra to understand that Christmas is more than gifts and food, urging families to “start the nativity scene revolution.”
