Government Defends Climate Record, Lists Major Green Projects

The Government has stated that concrete climate action is being taken, while accusing the Nationalist Party of issuing “a partisan statement lacking technical and detailed understanding” of the subject. According to the Government, the PN’s recent reaction on climate shows “a lack of technical knowledge” that overlooks the progress achieved in recent years.

The statement highlights that Malta’s emissions per capita have fallen by 44%, compared with the EU average of 34%, and that emissions per unit of GDP decreased by 81.6%, significantly higher than the EU’s 61.9%. This, it said, demonstrates that despite economic growth, an expanding workforce, and rising tourism, Malta has still taken “concrete actions that led to these results.”

The Government added that further measures are ongoing, with Budget 2026 containing “several concrete climate action initiatives,” contrasting with the PN’s vision document, described as “completely empty of ideas” on climate despite two deadline extensions.

It listed major national projects delivered or underway, including the second interconnector, large-scale renewable battery storage, progress on offshore wind, shore-to-ship energy in major ports, mobility reforms, waste-sector changes, Green Bonds, incentives for clean transport and alternative energy, and the electrification of Gozo’s public transport fleet.

The Government noted that an objective analysis by the National Audit Office found strong progress, with Malta being “one of only three countries to successfully allocate the entire Just Transition Fund.”
