At the fifth edition of MedTech World Malta, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted Malta’s expanding role as “a global platform for healthcare innovation”. He emphasised the country’s commitment to collaboration between government, academia, and industry—an ecosystem that enables research to become practical medical solutions. Against this backdrop, a major national announcement was made.
Azzopardi Tanti confirmed that the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) has been officially recognised as a European Cancer Mission Hub, strengthening Malta’s strategic position in EU-wide cancer research and cross-border collaboration. During the conference, an MOU was also signed between CRIHM and MedTech World. The Parliamentary Secretary stated, “It is our mission as a government to ensure positive collaborations… particularly in cancer research,” praising MedTech as an organisation with “vast capacity and expertise”.
MedTech CEO Dr Dylan Attard called the agreement “an important step in positioning Malta as a global centre for scientific and technological excellence”, noting that the combined strengths of MedTech World and CRIHM will accelerate real-world innovation in cancer care.
CRIHM Chairman Prof Christian Scerri explained that the new EU recognition will allow Malta to take on a stronger role in European cancer initiatives. He announced two new funding opportunities: the CRIHM Young Investigator Award and the CRIHM Open Access Publication Reimbursement Scheme, alongside updates on ongoing and new EU-funded projects.
