The Partit Nazzjonalista has stated that Finance Minister Clyde Caruana “must take responsibility for the data breach affecting thousands of companies,” arguing that the public has a right to full transparency about what happened to their sensitive information. The party described the release of personal and company data from a government department as “deeply concerning and [striking] at the heart of public trust.”
According to the PN, the Government’s earlier communication “claimed that the breach affected only one company,” but the Opposition said the incident involves “more than 7,000 local companies and individuals associated with them.” The party argued that such a large-scale disclosure “is not the result of an individual mistake, but evidence of systemic failures in the way data is handled, safeguarded, and managed.”
The PN insisted that responsibility “lies squarely with the Minister concerned,” calling on Clyde Caruana to immediately publish all relevant facts. It also said he must launch “an independent investigation, separate from any inquiry conducted by the Data Protection Commissioner or the Malta Tax and Customs Administration.”
Shadow Ministers Adrian Delia and Jerome Caruana Cilia stressed that the public “has a right to immediate remedies and a credible plan that restores trust in how personal data is handled.”
