Prime Minister Robert Abela has been reconfirmed as Leader of the Labour Party after securing 95.3% support from delegates during the party’s Extraordinary General Conference. Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg was confirmed as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs with 97.7% of the vote, while MEP Alex Agius Saliba retained his role as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs with 91.6% support.

The vote reaffirmed the party’s leadership following Labour’s historic fourth consecutive electoral victory and concluded a conference held under the theme “INT Malta: Your Dream, Our Project.”

Robert Abela: “The Trust Shown Will Be Repaid Through More Work”

Speaking shortly after the result was announced, Prime Minister Robert Abela described himself as “extremely satisfied” with the outcome, calling it a strong vote of confidence in the party’s leadership.

He said the result was the product of months of work within the party’s structures and praised delegates for the confidence they had placed in the leadership.

“We promise that this incredibly strong trust… will continue to be upheld through much more work in implementing the Manifesto,” Dr Abela said.

Reflecting on the first month of the new legislature, he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, praising the government’s determination and enthusiasm. He added that while the electoral manifesto is ambitious, the government has “the competence, the grit and the will” to deliver on every commitment.

Ian Borg: “Above All, It’s a Responsibility”

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, who received the highest percentage of support among the leadership team with 97.7%, thanked delegates for their confidence, describing the result as both exciting and humbling.

“Above all, it’s a burden,” he said, explaining that the overwhelming endorsement carries a responsibility to continue working for the party and the country.

Borg said he would continue working closely with Prime Minister Robert Abela, Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba, Cabinet colleagues and the parliamentary group to deliver the commitments made to the Maltese people.

“We have a programme backed by the vote of the Maltese people, now confirmed by the party. We’ll work on it and see it through,” he said.

Alex Agius Saliba: “A Strong Vote of Confidence for the Prime Minister”

Deputy Leader for Party Affairs Alex Agius Saliba thanked delegates and party activists after receiving 91.6% support.

“I want to thank all the delegates and activists of the Labour Party who gave their strong vote of confidence, not just to me, but more importantly, a very strong vote of confidence for the Prime Minister,” he said.

Agius Saliba pledged to continue strengthening the Labour Party’s structures while ensuring the party remains the country’s largest political force. He also said the leadership would continue supporting the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the parliamentary group so that the “INT Malta” electoral manifesto is fully implemented.

Conference Marks Start of New Legislature

The confirmation vote concluded the Labour Party’s Extraordinary General Conference, with delegates reaffirming the leadership team that will oversee the implementation of the party’s programme during the new legislature.

Throughout the conference, delegates also heard from a number of speakers who encouraged active participation in the party’s democratic process and highlighted the importance of implementing the commitments made to the Maltese and Gozitan people.
