Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela has announced a series of new proposals aimed at improving the quality of life for elderly people in Malta. Speaking during a political activity in Ħal Għaxaq, Abela said the proposals form part of the “Int Malta” manifesto and focus on pensions, healthcare assistance and support for vulnerable senior citizens.

Among the measures announced was a commitment that by 2028 the pension injustice affecting people born before and after 1962 will be fully addressed. Abela said widows will receive an additional 20% increase in pensions as compensation, while couples will be allowed to transfer excess paid social security contributions between them so that the partner lacking enough contributions can qualify for the minimum pension. He also referred to pension increases of “at least €50 per week.”

The Prime Minister further announced that elderly people over 75 years old living independently will receive an additional €200 payment. Financial assistance for elderly individuals employing a live-in carer will also increase from €9,000 to almost €11,000 annually. Meanwhile, seniors over the age of 80 living alone will receive a smart wearable device allowing doctors to monitor their health and provide immediate emergency assistance when needed.

Abela also pledged the expansion of Active Ageing Centres and improvements to the Silver T transport service. He stated that the Labour Party’s message is based on “the needs and dreams of the people,” while insisting that Malta needs leadership with “new ideas for the future” and a serious economic plan.
