Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed growing concern over the escalating crisis in the Middle East, warning that the conflict could have serious and unpredictable consequences, including potential effects on Italy. Speaking during a radio interview, Meloni said the situation “is worrying on several fronts,” highlighting the increasing instability in the international system.
She explained that the tensions reflect “an increasingly evident crisis of international law and multilateral institutions,” which she said are contributing to “a world increasingly governed by chaos.” According to the prime minister, Iran’s reaction to recent developments has intensified the situation, noting that Tehran is “essentially bombing several countries,” including nations that had previously worked toward a nuclear agreement with Iran.
Meloni warned that the conflict carries “the risk of an escalation that could have completely unpredictable consequences.” She added that the Italian government is closely monitoring developments because of the “possible repercussions for Italy.” The prime minister also stressed that Italy has no intention of entering the conflict, stating clearly: “We are not at war and we do not want to enter a war.”
She explained that any broader use of Italian military bases by allies would be discussed with Parliament if such a request were made. Meloni also emphasised that Italian security services remain fully mobilised, stressing that “the level of alert is extremely high” due to potential terrorism risks.
Meloni is expected to address Parliament on 11 March to discuss the Middle East crisis and the upcoming European Council meeting.
