Today’s Painting of the Day is The Calling of Saint Matthew, one of the defining masterpieces of the Baroque period, painted by Caravaggio between 1599 and 1600.

The painting captures the dramatic moment described in the Gospel according to St Matthew:

“As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he rose and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)

Caravaggio portrays the instant before Matthew leaves everything behind. Seated among fellow tax collectors, he points to himself in astonishment, as if asking, “Me?” Christ’s quiet gesture and commanding presence transform an ordinary working day into a life-changing encounter with divine grace.

Caravaggio revolutionised art through his bold use of chiaroscuro—the dramatic contrast between light and darkness. A powerful beam of light enters from the right, illuminating Matthew’s face and symbolising God’s grace breaking into the darkness of the human heart. The figures wear contemporary seventeenth-century clothing, bringing the Gospel into the viewer’s own world and making Christ’s call feel timeless.

One of the painting’s most striking details is Christ’s outstretched hand, which echoes the gesture of Adam in Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. It suggests that Christ is offering Matthew not only a new vocation but a new creation.

Commissioned for the Contarelli Chapel during the Counter-Reformation, the painting became one of the defining works of the Baroque era, influencing generations of artists through its realism, emotional depth, and spiritual intensity.

Today, The Calling of Saint Matthew remains in its original setting in the San Luigi dei Francesi, where it continues to invite viewers to reflect on Christ’s enduring call: “Follow me.”
