Today’s Painting of the Day is The Arnolfini Portrait, one of the most remarkable works of the Northern Renaissance, painted by Jan van Eyck in 1434. Today, the masterpiece is housed in the National Gallery in London and is celebrated for its extraordinary realism and attention to detail.

The painting portrays the wealthy Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife standing in their home. Every object within the room carries symbolic meaning, from the faithful little dog representing loyalty to the single lit candle symbolising the presence of God. The oranges on the windowsill, luxurious fabrics and elaborate furnishings also reflect the couple’s wealth and social status.

Perhaps the most fascinating feature is the small convex mirror hanging on the back wall. It reflects not only the couple but also two additional figures entering the room, one of whom is believed to be the artist himself. Above the mirror, Van Eyck famously signed the painting with the inscription “Johannes de Eyck fuit hic 1434” (“Jan van Eyck was here”), making it one of the earliest examples of an artist leaving such a personal signature within a work.

The painting is admired for its meticulous use of oil paint, allowing Van Eyck to achieve astonishing textures, reflections and lifelike detail. It revolutionised portrait painting and influenced generations of European artists.
